Team members: Cyclops (lead), Juggernaut (acting XO), Cable, Beast, Iceman (observer)

Objective: Retrieve newly manifested mutant from the Salt Flats, where her lack of control over her EM-related powers was resulting in explosions of sufficient magnitude to cause seismic disturbances.

Mission status: Unsuccessful.

Summary: We proceeded to the Salt Flats where we discovered the emergent mutant, whom we later identified as Sienna Blaze, 14, of Salt Lake City, in hysterics and not aware of her surroundings. Onboard sensors registered EM disturbances as we were coming in for a landing, but before we could touch down the Blackbird was clipped by one of the explosions, damaging the left wing. Cable managed to steady the jet so that we could make a successful landing.

We exited the plane to try and calm Blaze in hopes of assisting her to contain her powers for transportation back to the mansion. Her lack of control over her powers was total, and explosions were ongoing. She was obviously highly distraught, and Cable, though he made brief telepathic contact (see appended report #05-UT180-A-Ca) was distracted by shielding the rest of the team and the Blackbird. Beast attempted to administer a sedative but was unable to get close enough. Before we could attempt another option for containment, Blaze suffered another power flare and the resulting explosion backlashed on her, injuring her severely. Beast secured her for transport and we immediately airlifted her to hospital in Salt Lake City.

Her condition, as of our last update (see appended report #05-UT180-A-Be) was still critical. She suffered severe head and internal injuries and is comatose, with a poor prognosis. Her doctors in Salt Lake City have already consulted with our medical staff regarding her treatment and will continue to do so.

Notes:
1) The Blackbird will remain offline for roughly another forty-eight hours while repairs are completed.
2) The additional medical equipment on the Blackbird was very useful on this mission. Good idea, whoever had it - I can't remember at this point.

That's a very good point, Nathan. Under the circumstances, I can probably arrange for either the school or the Muir Island facility to be granted guardianship - if she has no other family, it won't be difficult. People aren't exactly lining up to take on comatose mutant children, and since we can provide a better level of ongoign care than the state, and have already been thoroughly vetted for suitability, it shouldn't take long.
